Nancy Susan Woods
Nancy S. Woods (1980) is a New York based artist also living and working in Ankara, Turkey and Berlin, Germany. She received her B.F.A. from Rhode Island School of Design in 2002 and her M.F.A. in Studio Art from The City College of New York (CUNY) in 2012. She previously worked as a bookbinder and conservator of rare books and manuscripts.
Woods's work explores issues regarding self-perception, escapism, and renovation through the mediums of video performance, painting, and sculpture. Most recently the works have come out of research of the history of popular psychology, self-help, and life coaching. Woods often uses herself as a guinea pig; immersing herself into relationships with life coaches, practicing self-help, and rediscovering lost practices of experimental popular psychology. The work which is realized through these experiences, presents popular psychological practices in a performative manner to reveal the theatricality of constructed identity.
